The Life Story Apprenticeship

A practicum-based certification for funeral and death care celebrants. Not a course, not a webinar... a working apprenticeship, learned the way this craft has always been learned: beside someone who does it for a living.

Learning a craft, not taking a course

Every quarter, two apprentices work directly under the mentorship of Phil Smith of The Life Story. They build real casework in their own communities, as consenting families and providers allow. They record their family meetings and service deliveries for review. And they meet weekly, over video, to work through the judgment calls that never show up in a curriculum: reading a grieving room, adjusting a script an hour before a service, earning the trust of a funeral director one conversation at a time.

The cohort stays small on purpose. Family privacy is protected, and each apprentice gets real attention rather than a seat in a crowded room. Graduates earn the credential of The Life Story Certified Celebrant (Apprenticeship)... and something harder to print: a mentor who would refer work to them.

Two ways to apprentice

Core Practicum

$3,600 CAD

The full 13-week arc: live family exposure as consented, script development, weekly mentorship, and the credential.

Practicum + Practice Build

$6,000 – $6,500 CAD

Everything in the Core Practicum, plus the complete practice-building toolkit, hands-on coaching to secure your own local provider relationships, a dedicated business-planning session, and 60 to 90 days of support after graduation.

Who this is for

Selection is not built on credentials. It is built on genuine intent, discretion and emotional maturity, and the judgment and voice that come through in your own writing. Adjacent experience helps... hospice, funeral service, chaplaincy, grief counselling, officiant work... and so do existing local relationships. Neither is required. What is required is that this is real to you.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and interviews are scheduled as interest comes in. There is no advantage to rushing a weak application, and no disadvantage to applying early. One honest note for applicants: the written response is read closely, and it is read for you. AI is not your friend in your response.

Two Seats, Every Quarter

Cohorts begin each quarter, and applications are welcome at any time... reviewed as they arrive, with interviews scheduled as interest comes in. Request the application package, or start a conversation about whether this apprenticeship is the right fit for where you are.
